Movies of 2012

Of the 83 movies I saw in 2012, only 13 of them were actually made in 2012.  That's by no means enough to make a definitive list, but I'll go ahead and rank them in order from worst to best.

It feels good to finally be finished with the backlog from 2012.  And hey, I'm only five months late!

13. The Devil Inside
- Found footage movies are quickly becoming the most annoying things in cinema.  This was undoutably the most badly made movie I saw in 2012, but at least it was funny, unlike a lot of this past year's fodder.

12. The Dark Knight Rises
- This one is probably the most controversial pick; I know a lot of people didn't like this film, but I'm surprised it took them so long to realize that Nolan is a terrible director.  And whoever edited this trilogy needs a new career.

11. Chronicle
- This was another one that was pretty funny but also a little infuriating at the same time.  It goes quite well with the next film on the list, both belonging to the "how did ANYONE like this crap?" column.

10. The Amazing Spider-Man
- Oh jeez.  I'd like to see a more unnecessary remake done more poorly than this.  Laughably bad with weak, flashy directing, and some of the worst writing I've ever seen from a 'gritty reboot'.  If I was going by sheer hatred, this would probably the worst offender on here.

  9. Underworld Awakening
- I remember nothing about this movie.  Next.

  8. Prometheus
- I remember a lot about this movie.  Most of it didn't make sense.  Even if it did, it was dreadfully stupid.

  7. Mirror Mirror
- It takes the middle spot because it's an absolutely middle-of-the-road type of movie.  Check it out at the bargain bin at Wal-Mart in a couple of months.

  6. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
- At least this movie looked nice.  I can't say much else for it, but it does have competence, unlike most of the entries above this one.  Boring, sure, but at least it works on a visual level.

  5. Project X
- Dumb party movie, but I didn't mind it too much because it was 4 AM and I was half-asleep anyway.

  4. Red Tails
- It's a testament to how many movies I didn't see when this one is the fourth best.  Pretty mediocre with lots of cheesy moments.  I can't remember why I gave it a positive score.  My mind is saying it's pretty bad.

  3. The Hunger Games
- One of the more impressive blockbusters of the year because it actually took some chances.  Sure, it may be an unoriginal idea, and the execution definitely wasn't perfect, but it's far from a bad movie.  Heck, it's the third best this year!

  2. The Avengers
- Not Joss Whedon's most emotionally-driven film, but that's okay, I don't mind some pulpy goodness with his trademark snappy dialogue and some well-directed action scenes.  A great comic book film; probably the best since Raimi's days.

  1. The Cabin in the Woods
- This is a special kind of movie; this is the kind of movie you think about all night after you see it.  It's the kind you have to see again.  There should be more movies like this.  But it's far and away the best of the year; I'd say that even if I saw 100 movies from 2012.

Here's to a good 2013!  Happy watching!
