5. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
-Everything on this album seems like it was placed with such a meticulous hand, it's a wonder it ever got finished. For such stripped down songs, there really seems like there's a lot going on, and most of that lies in the incredible melodies that Jeff Mangum wails over the top of his fuzzy chords and crazy novelty instruments. And the lyrics, based loosely around Anne Frank's life are just the right amount of abstract.
"The only girl I've ever loved
Was born with roses in her eyes
But then they buried her alive
One evening 1945."
4. Tell All Your Friends - Taking Back Sunday
-There's nothing particularly special about this album; Taking Back Sunday don't reinvent anything, but they do play a ridiculously passionate ten tracks of solid, fairly edgy pop-punk. The dueling vocals of singer Adam Lazzara and guitarist John Nolan work tremendously and the imperfect recordings and occasional vocal cracks only add to the energy that the album brings.
"Broken down in bars and bathrooms
All I did was what I had to
Don't believe me when I tell you
It's just what anyone would do"
3. The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me - Brand New
-Sometimes there are albums that just click right away, and then sometimes there are albums that you have to listen to on your way to your house at 3 AM in the rain while depressed to truly appreciate. This is the latter. This is the perfect album to scream along to in the car, as you really start to feel the pain in singer Jesse Lacey's voice. The guitar work is simple yet full of emotion, and the lyrics are devastatingly bleak. Wait 'till you're depressed, then give this a listen.
"Well, Jesus Christ, I'm alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead?
'Cause this problem's gonna last more than the weekend."
2. Pinkerton - Weezer
-After the success with the Blue Album, Weezer couldn't really go poppier (except they did later...way) so the other direction they could go was really dirty and loud. And as soon you hear the thunderous drum beat of opener "Tired of Sex" you know you're in for a ride. Rivers Cuomo screeches and wails for 30 minutes about some of the more embarrassing things in his life, and it's dripping with such honesty that it's impossible not to love. By the time you get to the closer "Butterfly", you've gone on such a journey that you're right there with Rivers, consumed by that overwhelming earnestness.
"I know I should get next to you
You got a look that makes me think you're cool
But it's just sexual attraction
Not something real so I'd rather keep wackin'"
1. ...Is a Real Boy - Say Anything
What started as a rock opera written by a bipolar drug addicted man in his early twenties has to be the strangest album on the list. Unconventional in every sense of the word but still containing catchy hooks and memorable guitar lines is no easy task. But as Max Bemis snarls and shouts his way through the obviously musical-inspired album, you can't help but fall in love with his cynical, sarcastic attitude. He's mellowed out considerably in recent years, but nothing will ever top his yelling of the epic closer "Admit It!!!". This album is packed full with so many memorably moments that it warrants and infinite amount of listens, and every time you're guaranteed to find something new.
"Please take me out of my body
Up through the palm trees
To smell California in sweet hypocrisy
Floating, my senses surround my body
I wake my nose to smell that ocean burn"
